I am wondering whether SEDOLs of defunct stocks (or stock listings) are 'recycled', and if yes, how long the 'mourning period' might be before the number is re-used.

I also realize that with a 6 digit format, and various sections of the available number space allocated to various regions/countries, we might run out of numbers. This might force the SEDOL system to go the same route as the Swiss 'Valor' system, which some time ago gave in and introduced a seventh digit.
