Netherlands Antilles split into three separate jurisdictions

As of October 10, 2010 the Netherland Antilles have ceased to exist as a country. Curacao and Sint Maarten (Dutch part) have become separate countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while Bonaire, Saba and Saint Eustatius have become special Dutch municipalities. Aruba already had a separate status.

On December 15, 2010 the ISO 3166 (Country codes) Maintenance Agency therefore announced the following changes:

1. Country code AN will be deleted

2. New country codes will be allocated as follows:

  • BQ for Bonaire, Saba and Saint Eustatius
  • CW for Curacao
  • SX for Sint Maarten (Dutch part)
  • AW for Aruba (this code had been existing and used already)

For ISIN allocation the following applies:

1. All ISINs allocated before December 15 with an AN-prefix will not be changed. For new issues the prefixes mentioned above will be used according to ISO 6166 rules.

2. Since no National Numbering Agency is appointed for these countries yet, ISINs with AW, CW and SX prefix will be allocated by the Substitute Numbering Agency CUSIP Global Services in the US. BQ-ISINs will be allocated by the Dutch Numbering Agency since the three islands are now part of the Netherlands.
